Grin And Bare It All
By Amy Parker, Chief Exec of The What
I had a transformative, ‘let it all hang out’ experience this week and it happened at a little Korean Spa in San Francisco. I’m not quite ready to divulge the name of our secret spot, but here’s how it went down.
All in the name of research, GP convinced me that spending a rainy afternoon post-meetings would be good for my soul, as well as my pasty winter body. I got the 90 minute oil + body scrub and she opted for the 100 minute 24 Kt Gold treatment then off we went in our birthday suits. I’m a nudist at heart and not much phases me, but I’ve never been to a Korean Spa and this was a brand new experience.
After showering and enjoying a hot soak, followed by a cold plunge with other naked spa-goers I was ushered back to a semi-private area, by my bra and pantie-clad practitioner. I was told to lay face down on a treatment bed covered with a pink rubber sheet then the scrubbing began. Face-down, face-up, side-to-side, there was not an inch of my body that wasn’t masterfully scrubbed, buffed and polished. She poured a bucket of warm water over my body after the vigorous scrub down then moved into the massage portion of my treatment, which stretched, softened and worked my travel weary muscles. I was in a state of utter relaxation and lost all track of time, but I figured my time must be up. What could be possibly be left? Well, a divine scalp massage followed by a face massage, a mini facial masque and then, wait for it…a full shampoo and conditioning. Only to be topped by a warm milk rinse, as I was gently coaxed into a sitting position and quickly tried to regain my senses.
I’ve never been so thoroughly scrubbed, oiled and massaged and back in our Splendora days, we used to review spas for a living. My treatment was less than 90 minutes and I felt as if I’d been there for hours, blissfully unaware of the strange surroundings and the women lying next to me, separated by only a frosted glass partition.
I’m already plotting my next visit and wondering which of my gf’s will be ready to grin and bare it all with me. Next time though, I’m making a day of it to enjoy the saunas, soaking tubs, their himalayan salt room and their relaxation rooms. If summer bodies are truly made in the winter, then this little body wellness discovery has come at the perfect time.
