Issue #136 – Let’s Talk About Money. Finally
It’s hard to get back to work after a midweek holiday and time is flying by as we cruise into July. Every time we tune into the news a feeling of dread begins to creep in but we’re getting proactive in our communities, in our work, and about our health and well-being. No more excuses. We’re back on our meditation path fueled by summer salads to make up for two weeks of rosé all day and cheese all night.
The What List
July 5, 2018
by Gina Pell + Amy Parker
100% Editorial picks. No pay for play. Ever.
The Sun. Last week we mentioned effective sunscreens for your face and body but a wise reader pointed out that some of these were not safe for ecosystems at the beach, lakes, or near oceans. Here’s a list of reef-friendly non-toxic sunscreens from the Ocean Conservancy website.
The Summit. Tickets to our very first The What Summit, an all-woman event October 5, 2018, are going fast. Secure your spot here. We wish this event could be free but we are producing an inspiring all-day catered affair with many teachings, goodies, experts, and long-lasting benefits and connections that will exceed the ticket price.
The Friends. Why Women’s Friendships Are So Complicated from the Atlantic.
The Plunge. Here’s something random but helpful if you’ve ever spent hours in a dressing room trying to find something that works. We found this economical, flattering bra for under $20 to wear with dresses that are lowcut in the front and/or back. Best for C cups or smaller.
MEET THE PERENNIAL SUSAN GRIFFIN-BLACK
We first met Susan in 2000 when her company EO Products was on its way to becoming a household name and we were starting our first entrepreneurial endeavor, Splendora, which we sold back in 2011. Susan has always been our North Star, both personally and professionally. She built a successful company that is skyrocketing nearly 25 years later despite her marital split from Brad Black, continuing co-founder but now ex-husband. Theirs is an inspirational story of integrity and commitment, which even caught the attention of The New York Times: Marriage Ended. The Company Thrived. When MSNBC aired the first national story about our term Perennial last year, they wanted us to give an example of a Perennial entrepreneur and thinker. Susan was the first person who came to mind. She has a mindset that has always been open, expansive, and inclusive. She is also a soulful entrepreneur who has been a practicing student of Zen Buddhism for over thirty years (we started meditating after a conversation with her last May) and she fosters a workplace culture that is infused with right-mindedness, autonomy, and humility. Next week, as we kick off our official partnership with EO as a supporter of The What and contributor to a monthly column on mindfulness, conscious leadership, and the power of scent … we want to congratulate Susan and EO on winning the 2018 Conscious Workplace Award. She truly embodies her favorite saying, “Work is love made visible.” We are grateful for EOs support of this newsletter and community and hope our love for Susan and EO’s products are evident. Next time you see her products on your grocery store shelves, you’ll know that they are made with love and kindness. Chime into an active discussion happening on The What Women about EO and your favorite scents/essential oils.

Let’s Talk About Money with ELLEVEST
According to a recent survey, 80% of women hold back from talking about money with family and friends even though 92% want to learn more about financial planning. We are capable of having the most intimate conversations with our friends but the topic of money rarely comes up. Meanwhile, our male counterparts swap financial advice and stock tips constantly. Money is power and it’s time we get pro-active about talking, sharing, and learning about it. If you don’t live in SF or can’t join us, learn more about ELLEVEST here.
