Issue #176 – The Sleep Issue
Sleep is a topic that pops up everywhere we go—at meetings, lunches, dinners, conferences. Like another *hot* topic, it’s something everyone craves but doesn’t seem to be getting much of these days. Last night we were talking with a savvy and trusted friend (thanks BG) about sleep and it turns out it’s a subject he’s been researching deeply. Below are some of his, and other smart friends, effective resources to catch your Zzzzs.

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, PhD, is a breakthrough book by the Director of UC Berkeley’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab. The Guardian describes Walker as a life-changing neuroscientist who has found “a revolutionary way of being cleverer, more attractive, slimmer, happier, healthier and of warding off cancer.”
High in omega-6 fatty acids, Evening Primrose oil has long been known for its medicinal benefits from skin to bone to blood. It’s a plant native to North America but also grows in Europe and parts of the Southern hemisphere. Native Americans used the whole plant for bruises, wounds, sore throats, gastrointestinal complaints and even hemorrhoids. In a comprehensive 2013 study by the NIH it was even found to help relieve eczema but many friends said it works wonders for sleep and symptoms of PMS and menopause. Men can also benefit as it helps with everything from hair loss, heart disease, chronic fatigue, and more.
It’s been absolutely gutting and heartwrenching, our friends we have lost to cancer and our loved ones who are doing everything they can to survive it. Fu@k cancer! But, we came across a fascinating article in The New York Times about sleeping with cancer that we can all learn from. The author Susan Gubar, who has been dealing with ovarian cancer since 2008, explains how she’s found ways to dispense with chemical sleeping aids.
We recently discovered the National Sleep Foundation website and visit it during sleepless nights. There are insightful articles on how sleep is different for men and women and how dreams affect how well you sleep. If you have problems sleeping it’s definitely worth a click.
SIGN UP TEN FRIENDS. GET A TOTE.
It’s no secret that THE WHAT is comprised of two hustlers scrambling to keep our indie media company happily afloat in a sea of sinking ships. We’ve grown to our community to 100,000 strong with the support and love of our family, friends, and super readers who have helped us spread the word but we could really use your help in getting more people to receive THE WHAT LIST. We can’t afford a fancy Tell A Friend engine so we’re doing it old school.
Please forward this email to TEN friends (ideally 20 or more) and tell them why they should sign up for The What List then cc: email@example.com and we will send you The What Tote. Thanks in advance for doing us this solid. We need all the help we can get.
