Storytelling is our passion, both crafting and watching. And there is no subject we love more than musicians. Shangri-La, a four-part series, charts Rick Rubin’s atypical path from raunchy punk rocker to iconic zen master hip hop producer (and former president of Columbia Records, as well as the co-founder of Def Jam Records). Variety has seven keen observations about the series to watch for.
Rather than flounder in the summer heat last weekend, we retreated to a cool theater to watch Blinded By The Light, a charming bittersweet film set in the 80s and based on the true story of Javed Khan, a Pakistani teen living in a racist English suburb reeling from layoffs at the auto plant. To his astonishment and everyone around him, Javed finds salvation and creative inspiration in the music of Bruce Springsteen. It’s not as polished and evenly paced as Yesterday (the must-see of the summer) but it’s a testament to how music can awaken the soul and free the mind.
Looking for something light? If you liked the movie Four Weddings And A Funeraland love Mindy Kaling, check out her new show of the same name based on the movie with a cameo by Andie MacDowell. Watch the trailer.
It’s not a show yet but it will be … Alpha Girls by Julian Guthrie is the story of four women who took Silicon Valley by storm (including Theresia Gouw, a venture star we greatly admire and an advisor who sat on our Joyus board years ago). If you’re looking for a book to buy the alpha girl in your life, this is it. Julian will be at The What Summit in October. Stay tuned for the announcement of her session.
