The What. Shopping Edition
When it comes to shopping, we do most of it online and are often disappointed by our purchases. As curators of The What List, we try to keep the list unisex and have therefore avoided fashion–especially what we’re buying and wearing. But after running into a friend this weekend who lamented that she has no idea where to shop and could use some inspiration on what to buy, we decided to open up our closet and let you see what’s been working for us.
Many of the places we shop are spendy and not exactly budget shopping but this is due to the fact that we’re not constant shoppers. In fact, as friends and business partners for almost twenty years, we have almost never shopped for clothes together. In the past, we frequented mass clothing retailers like H&M and Forever 21 but the clothes would usually fall apart before the year was over and frankly we got tired of the constant consumerism. The pieces we buy now are investments that we keep for a minimum of five years, ideally ten, so while we spend more on our average purchase we buy fewer items and keep them longer. If that sounds convincing, read on …

RECENT PURCHASES WE LOVE
FREE PEOPLE RUCHED DRESS $128
This is a simple, elegant and easy to wear dress that fits true to size. The only downsid to this piece is the hard-to-button back closure so only unbutton a few at the top to get in and out of the dress.
THE PRADA PLATFORM BOOTIE $930
Is it crazy to drop a stack on shoes? Absolutely! But, if you can justify the splurge by amortizing how much you’re going to wear these babies (and that you will keep them for at least ten years because they’re so well-made) then these are the high heeled booties for you. These are probably the most comfortable heels we’ve ever encountered. We walked a few blocks in them with zero discomfort. The description says they run big but we found the sizing accurate.
THE UPSIDE CROPPED PANT $138 These pants had us at elastic waistband. Cute for the gym or running around town, these cropped pants run a little big so size down.
OVERSIZED FAUX FUR COAT $229 Teddy Bear Coats have been all the rage this season. The original by MaxMara can set you back $3500. We found this one at Urban Outfitters for a fraction of the price. The faux fur is so soft we wish we could use it as a comforter.
COMMES DES GARCONS CARDIGAN $391 We wear this cardigan more than anything in our closet. It transforms a simple white tee and sweatpants into something we can wear at the office. Oddly, men compliment the sweater often.
PRPS GAUCHO JEANS $208 Break out of your fashion freeze and try something new. These gauchos are easy to wear and look great with every kind of shoe, especially a heel.
