Imagine if social media existed during Nazi Germany? This is a question explored by the Instagram account Eva.Stories, a chilling episodic video diary with 1.5 million followers which recounts the real-life story of a 13-year old Hungarian Jewish girl named Eva Heyman. The videos are highly produced like snippets of a feature film—playful as expected from a social account of a teenager and then crushingly disturbing as her circumstances take a turn to the unthinkable. Created by Mati Kochavi, an Israeli hi-tech billionaire who is from a family of Holocaust survivors and victims, and his daughter Maya it’s a modern day take on the diary of Anne Frank with the intention to “bring the memory of the Holocaust to the young generation,” says Kochavi, “We have to bring it where they are. And they’re on Instagram.”
